The doctors at MetroPartners OBGYN are highly trained and have decades of experience performing surgical procedures. Some of these procedures can be performed in the clinic, while others are performed in operating room suites. Commonly performed procedures are listed on our website. If you do not see a specific procedure listed, please contact us for more information.
Endometrial Ablation
For women experiencing heavy periods, an ablation is a procedure performed to reduce the amount of uterine lining, or endometrial tissue, that causes excess bleeding. With little or no endometrial tissue, the amount of bleeding during menstruation can be drastically reduced. At MetroPartners OBGYN, we commonly use Novasure, which reduces the endometrial tissue using electrical energy to directly cauterize the endometrial tissue. This method takes only minutes to perform, requires a few days of recovery, and over 80% of women undergoing these procedures are happy with their results.
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy procedure is performed to directly visualize the uterine cavity or lining of the uterus using a camera. This procedure helps identify whether the lining of the uterus is thin or thick, contains a polyp or fibroid, or if there are potentially cancerous tumors, in addition to other uses. This is a routine procedure that can be performed in the clinic or in an operating room suite, and usually requires a few days of recovery.
Colposcopy
Colposcopy procedures are performed to identify whether there are precancerous changes in the cervix. If an abnormality is seen through the microscope, biopsies are taken to determine whether precancerous cells are present. Based on the biopsy result, we can determine appropriate next steps.
Loop Electrical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
The LEEP procedure is performed to treat precancerous changes in the cervix. Under local anesthesia, the center of the cervix, the area that may be undergoing precancerous changes, is removed by a wire loop connected to an electrosurgical cautery unit. The procedure takes only a few minutes, is performed in the clinic or surgery center, and is nearly painless. For 2 weeks following the procedure, patients should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous aerobic exercise, and sexual intercourse to reduce the risk of bleeding. The procedure is successful in eradicating precancerous changes and normalizing the cervical tissue 90% of the time.
Sonohysterogram
A sonohysterogram, or saline ultrasound, is a tool used to evaluate the uterine lining. When the uterine lining appears thick on regular ultrasound, it can cause symptoms including abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, or postmenopausal bleeding. In this procedure, fluid is instilled into the uterine cavity and ultrasound images are taken with a transvaginal ultrasound probe inside the vagina. The fluid outlines certain irregularities, such as polyps, fibroids, or tumors, in the uterine lining. This procedure is performed in the clinic and there is typically very little recovery time required after the procedure.
